To clear Ace Combat 8 Mission 16, identify and sink three disguised container ships, each with three cranes on deck and a sun emblem on the hull, then destroy the Explosive UAVs if they launch. The drones climb toward the Space Elevator's 12,000-meter mark. Confirm both ship markings before firing, protect civilian vessels, and prioritize the highest drones once the aerial phase begins.
What should you equip before the sortie?
Multi-target air-to-air weapons — recommended
Bring multi-lock air-to-air weapons to engage several climbing UAVs quickly. The ships are stationary during the blockade, so prepare your loadout for the aerial interception that can follow the search.
A loadout focused on ground targets
This concentrates firepower on the three ships, but gives up the recommended ability to engage multiple UAVs with a multi-target air-to-air weapon. No mandatory aircraft or unique weapon setup is established for this clear route.
How do you identify the three ships?

- Search the northwest shipping area first, where the target ships are concentrated.
- Make a wide pass over each container ship to inspect its deck, then check the hull from the side.

- Confirm three cranes and a sun emblem together before attacking.
- Sink each confirmed impostor and continue until all three disguised ships are destroyed.
Three cranes alone are not enough: civilian ships can also have three cranes. Do not attack civilian vessels. Dialogue says drone assembly takes less than 10 minutes; search promptly rather than treating that as a guaranteed countdown.
Avoid spending the search chasing unrelated fighters. If a close dogfight interrupts your inspection, Ace Combat 8 PSM covers changing your angle of attack.
How do you stop the Explosive UAVs?

- When UAVs launch, switch immediately from searching ships to aerial interception. UAVs can launch from a sinking ship even after all disguised ships have been sunk.
- Climb toward the drones heading for the Space Elevator.
- Prioritize UAVs that are already highest. Use multi-target air-to-air weapons when several are climbing together, and avoid getting drawn into dogfights below them.
- Keep attacking until every UAV is destroyed.
The confirmed 12,000-meter mark is the drones' target height. An exact altitude-triggered mission failure condition is not confirmed yet; do not wait for a presumed cutoff before intercepting.
The conflicting height claims remain unresolved:
| Height wording | Status |
|---|---|
| 12,000 meters | Confirmed in mission dialogue as the target height. |
| 12,000ft — October 5, 2026 | Claimed failure threshold; not confirmed yet. |
| 40,000 feet — October 4, 2026 | Claimed critical altitude; not confirmed yet. |

After the final UAV is destroyed, listen for the all-clear and confirmation that the Space Elevator has been saved. Sinking the ships alone is not the endpoint when UAVs are airborne.
