Known bug

For ace combat 8 wings of theve hotas support, use Joystick Mapper if your flight stick is not recognised or its native bindings are incomplete: it turns your stick, throttle and pedals into one virtual Xbox 360 controller. This is the Easy HOTAS Support route, with an Ace Combat 8 starting profile. Native compatibility varies by device; a complete official compatibility list is not confirmed yet.

Which setup should I choose?

Joystick Mapper — recommended for a first attempt

You map physical controls to Xbox inputs without editing the game's binding files. Keep the app running while playing. Windows installation is available; Linux support is experimental. VKB Gladiators have dedicated layouts, with different support levels for right-hand, left-hand and Omni Throttle models.

Native flight-stick controls

If your current setup already works, you may not need a workaround. T Flight HOTAS X has a working PC report; HOTAS One reports include both working controls and missing or incorrect inputs. A MOZA AB9/MH16, MTP throttle and Slaw RH Rotor pedal setup has a failure report. These experiences do not establish universal compatibility.

AC8HOTAS mod — direct bindings for offline single-player

This Windows x64 option binds separate controllers directly to game controls through UE4SS and bindings.lua. It requires offline launching with Easy Anti-Cheat disabled and Expert flight controls. The combined package includes AC8AnalogYaw for proportional yaw. Use this route if you want direct bindings and accept those requirements.

Some device configuration options available in ACE COMBAT 7 are unavailable in ACE COMBAT 8. Improvements are under review, but a completed fix and release date are not confirmed yet. Do not assume an ACE COMBAT 7 configuration will carry over.

How do I configure Joystick Mapper?

Install the app and connect your devices

Use the Windows release installer named Joystick-Mapper-Setup-x.y.z.exe. Connect the stick, throttle and pedals you want to map. Turn off or unplug other gamepads so they do not take the player-one slot.

Create a game profile

Open Profile → New profile and use Ace Combat 8 as the starting point. Do not leave Default selected: that profile creates no virtual controller and leaves the physical stick unchanged.

Assign each device a role

Open the device selector in the top bar. Check Stick, Throttle, Pedals or Extra and correct any guessed role. Up to four devices can have roles at once; assigning an occupied role makes its previous device step aside.

Map axes and buttons

Click NOT MAPPED to choose an Xbox input. Open AC8 controls to see the game's gamepad actions, then place them on your stick. Use INV for reversed axes. Leave Springs back to centre on for sticks, twists and pedals; turn it off for throttles and sliders. For other input questions, use the ACE COMBAT 8 flight controls page.

Save and check the virtual controller

Changes apply live; click Save or press Ctrl+S to keep them. With the game profile active, press Win+R, run joy.cpl, and look for Controller (XBOX 360 For Windows). Keep Joystick Mapper running or minimised while you play: closing it disconnects the virtual controller.

Yaw twistLB / RB SplitTwist presses the rudder bumpers
Drifting axisRecenter, then DZ/SENS if neededRecenter at rest; deadzone ignores small movements

Linux: install the appropriate .deb, .rpm or AppImage, then connect your devices and click Allow access. Repeat that permission step when adding a new device. Steam Deck needs a password set first because the permission prompt asks for it. Linux compatibility with your particular stick and game setup is not confirmed yet.

Will my VKB or T.FLIGHT.STICK.X work?

These are Joystick Mapper support levels, not an official game compatibility list.

DeviceMapper support
VKB Gladiator NXT EVO, right handFully supported: tested, with photo layout and named controls
VKB Gladiator NXT EVO, left handBeta: owner confirmation still in progress
VKB Gladiator NXT EVO Omni Throttle, either handBeta
Logitech Extreme 3D ProFully supported
Other USB sticks, throttles or pedalsExperimental automatic detection with a universal layout

For two VKB Gladiators, assign separate roles in the device selector and map each device. Both feed the same virtual Xbox controller; the left-hand model remains beta.

For MICROSOFT T.FLIGHT.STICK.X, exact-model native compatibility is not confirmed yet. The working T Flight HOTAS X report does not confirm that differently named device. Try the mapper's experimental universal layout if native inputs fail; success for that exact model is not confirmed yet.

What if inputs still fail or feel wrong?

  • No response: check that a game profile is active, Xbox emulation is enabled, the virtual controller appears in joy.cpl, and another gamepad has not taken player one.
  • Yaw needs almost a full twist: lower press point for LB / RB Split. A zero deadzone alone does not remove the button activation threshold.
  • Small movements disappear: adjust the game's Steam controller deadzone or disable Steam Input for that game. Steam can add a deadzone beyond the mapper's setting.
  • Plane drifts: release the stick and click Recenter. Adjust deadzone only if needed; sensitivity changes the response curve, while anti-deadzone offsets a game-applied deadzone.
  • Mouse or button-remapping trouble: continue with ACE COMBAT 8 mouse controls.

For a repeatable test flight, choose your test setting using ACE COMBAT 8 difficulty levels. If the remaining problem is display performance rather than input response, use ACE COMBAT 8 graphics settings.

How do I use the direct-binding mod instead?

  1. Close the game. In Steam, select Manage → Browse local files, then open EasyAntiCheat.
  2. Copy Settings.json to AC8HOTAS_Offline.json, leaving the original unchanged. Add a comma after the final existing setting and insert "allow_null_client": "true" before the closing brace. Keep the filename ending in .json.
  3. Set this complete Steam launch option:
cmd /d /c "set EOS_USE_ANTICHEATCLIENTNULL=1&& %command% -anticheat_settings=AC8HOTAS_Offline.json"
  1. For a fresh installation without UE4SS, copy the full package's Game folder into the game installation. The loader belongs beside Game/Binaries/Win64/AceCombat8.exe. If UE4SS is already installed, use the mod-only bundle, copy its mod folders into the active Mods folder, and enable AC8HOTAS and optionally AC8AnalogYaw in the existing mod list.
  2. Connect your controllers, launch through Steam and select Expert flight controls. Open Game/Binaries/Win64/UE4SS/Mods/AC8HOTAS/bindings.lua. All controls start unbound: use the detected-device list at the bottom to assign inputs.
  3. Save and press F5 in game. Newly assigned devices may need a USB reconnect. Back up bindings.lua before updating.

Use this mod setup only for offline single-player. To return to protected launching, close the game, disable or remove the UE4SS loader, and clear the launch option. Disabling HOTAS alone leaves UE4SS loaded. For the full package's loader, move dwmapi.dll out of Game/Binaries/Win64; this also disables other UE4SS mods.

The mod cannot map devices with the same product ID separately, supports only the first POV hat, and has not tested every listed action. Game updates may affect compatibility, especially analog yaw.

Status as of October 7, 2026: Native flight-stick configuration limitations remain acknowledged; Joystick Mapper and the offline AC8HOTAS mod provide workaround routes, while a completed official fix is not confirmed yet.
